Build a leather tack care routine

A regular care routine is also an inspection opportunity. Before applying a cleaner or conditioner, identify the material and finish and review the maker’s instructions. Some equipment combines leather, synthetic sections, stitching and metal that need different treatment.

Work through it

1. Remove surface dirt using the recommended method. Inspect stitching, holes, buckles and areas that flex under load. Set aside equipment with damage that needs assessment.
2. Use compatible cleaning products in the instructed amount. Avoid soaking the item or assuming that more conditioner will solve every stiffness problem.
3. Allow the tack to dry as directed and store it in an appropriate environment. Reinspect before use, particularly after prolonged storage or wet conditions.

• Material and product compatibility are checked.
• Load-bearing parts are inspected.
• Damage is assessed before the item returns to use.
