Prepare for a riding helmet fitting

Bring useful measurements and evaluate the actual helmet on your head.

2 minute read · Updated September 17, 2026

A helmet’s size label is only a starting point. Head shape and the specific model affect fit. Use the current manufacturer instructions and a knowledgeable fitter, and check the applicable safety standard required by your riding organization.

Work through it

  1. Measure your head using the maker’s stated method. Bring the hairstyle you normally ride with and avoid assuming that another brand’s size transfers directly.
  2. Try the actual helmet and adjust it according to its instructions. Check for even contact and movement, and ask the fitter to evaluate the result.
  3. Review care, impact-replacement and lifespan guidance for that model. Keep the instructions and purchase details with your equipment records.

Check your result

  • The model’s fit instructions are followed.
  • Required certification is verified on the product.
  • Replacement guidance is understood.
